After receiving numerous queries regarding eczema over since we began in 2004, I thought it best to summarise a few tips on how I have learnt to manage my very sensitive skin condition. Please take the following notes in the spirit it is intended. I can only speak from my own personal Eczema experience. If you have not yet consulted your Doctor about a skin condition that is currently affecting you, I would strongly advise that you seek his or her advice before trying other avenues. For example, your skin condition/eczema may be a symptom of an underlying condition?
As a child I experienced infantile eczema & severe nappy rashes, I then appeared to grow out of it. As a little girl experimenting with my mother's make up, I would immediately suffer with allergic skin reactions... in one instance my reaction was mistaken for chicken pox. Later, in my adult years my intolerance to food and skin sensitivities increased alarmingly, which led to some extremely aggressive bouts of eczema and debilitating food allergies. At one point in my life I was extremely frightened of eating food. During my time with eczema it was very obvious that anyone can suffer with numerous types of eczema at the same time! The doctor would search around my body labelling my ugly weepy/dry red patches as "Contact", "Atopic", "Discoid" & "Seborrhoeic". I was given all sorts of treatments, from antiviral, antibacterial to anti-fungal. But it kept coming back time after time!
However, the final straw was when I visited my Doctor and was asked to, for the millionth time, to think about "keeping a diary"... it was so obvious the Doctor could not help me, other than supply me with steroid creams. That was it. I just couldn't let these allergies rule my life, not any more. I had to take responsibility for myself and learn about what made me healthy, and what didn't. It struck me then that unless I change what is going on in the inside, nothing will change on the outside! I then started to really take note of what made me feel ill/feel good. That was when my life turned around and I started to manage my sensitivities so much better.
Did you know healthy skin requires no products at all? Skin is a marvellous piece of engineering, skin can self cleanse, rejuvenate, desquamate [exfoliate] & self regulate and moisturise. The skin oil and sweat combine to create a natural anti-bactericide ~ this healthy and robust acid mantle is able to fend off invading microbes.
If your skin is upset it could possibly mean:
1. Over washing &/or extreme weather conditions. 2. Lack of essential nutrients in your diet - think about it like this: if you are building a house and you only have enough building materials for a garage - how can you build a robust, safe & reliable house with the materials provided? 3. Stressed. Or 4. An underlying health condition that requires an invesigation by your Doctor.
If you keep this in mind, you should be able to start managing eczema sensitivities a whole lot better than thinking your skin needs X and Y product to keep it healthy. Our skin is truly marvellous when it is in homeostasis ~ a healthy state.
However, if your skin is upset and in need of help, we can give the best available advice for managing this precarious eczema skin condition. So it shouldn't be too much longer before you get back to healthy vibrant skin.
Some helpful tips for Eczema
When experiencing eczema it is very important to treat it with the steroid treatment prescribed to you by your Doctor. If the skin is left open/raw/inflamed/bleeding, there is an extreme risk of infection; topical steroids will help and should cease the infection in its tracks. I tried many alternative remedies in the beginning, but the only sure way forward was medical intervention. But saying that, it’s one thing getting rid of eczema temporarily, but being rid of it for good was now the goal.
Once the infection/bleeding/weeping & general rawness has been cleared up with the use of steroids I heavily moisturised my skin with natural & organic skincare ointments which are great for after steroid applications [use after gently cleansing the skin]. I kept moisturising my skin even though clumps of dry flaky skin fell off. Because steroids heal the upper skin almost immediately, the underneath skin won't have healed as fast. Unfortunately, when the upper skin is crusty & flaking it can open up and expose the raw and sore skin underneath. This action restarts the itching cycle again. The trick here is to use the natural & organic ointments to glue the upper skin together, to prevent the raw and unhealed skin beneath from being exposed prematurely. These natural & organic ointments contain nutrient rich Essential Fatty Acids, and are the absolute best for raw and exposed eczema skin challenges.
In 2007 I created Skin Quench to help my clients with Eczema. I'd make small batches for them to take away with them after their holistic Aromatherapy treatments. Over the years I have received great customer feedback in how this cream has healed their Eczema, and other irritating skin conditions. Skin Quench is now available in our Shop.
When my skin was at its worst the very best for me to wear was an oversized dressing gown - this helped the air to circulate, helping the eczema wounds heal. The aim here was to keep my skin at optimum moisture levels too. How long did the skin take to start healing? From applying steroids to weeping eczema wounds, the first signs of healing started to appear half a week later. I was at the time signed off sick from work, so, back then I could take every day as it came.
Using topical steroids can also unfortunately re-start the eczema itching, as previously explained. This is why eczema keeps coming back/becomes re-infected, it’s that unbearable urge to rip my skin off, that unbearable burning itch that I just couldn't leave it alone. Whilst at the stage of heavily moisturising my flaky eczema skin, I tried antihistamines [important: I checked with my Doctor first]. As said before, when the skin starts to heal and peel in very dry thick layers it can feel like a heavy sticky clay mask tugging and this in itself keeps the burning itch going.
Antihistamines were excellent for getting rid of the horrible urge to scratch. They really did work for me because after the initial 7/8 hours were complete, the urge to eczema scratch came back. Since 2012 I have investigated natural antihistamines, and one in particular is proving to be very effective for allergies - Quercetin. Quercetin is also good for food intolerance leading to IBS symptoms. It is also great for hayfever problems too. Quercetin is certainly a nutrient worth checking out.
Even after the eczema itch stopped, I continued topping up my skin's moisture levels, this was vital! I only stopped heavily moisturising with natural & organic ointments when I stopped the antihistamines and my skin no longer itched without the aid of antihistamines. I kept my former eczema skin well moisturised for a good few weeks more, just to ensure that the integrity of my skin was intact [depending on age, it can take up to four weeks for fresh new skin to appear from the base layer to the top].
The older we become, the slower the skin growth. The paranoia of eczema returning does ease off, eventually! The day that I left my skin free of any lotions and potions without worry was very liberating indeed!
I found that a little sunlight was very beneficial for eczema. After heavily moisturising the very dry and flaky skin [with no infection] I sat in the garden for about 10 minutes, after 3:45pm, to avoid burning. Of course, if weather permitting.
Whilst I was trying to heal my eczema topically, I started to research Essential Fatty Acids for healing my skin from within. EFAs are precursors for the hormones that look after the skin and reproductive system. Unfortunately, by the time that I noticed that I lacked EFAs my skin was already in a horrible eczema mess and it took me some time to get my levels back to a healthy normal. Hair and skin are always the first to be compromised when the body is deficient of EFAs. I increased my EFAs by eating the correct foods such as avocados, nuts & seeds, etc. I also came to the conclusion that it would be a good idea to take supplements for increased effectiveness ~ and they worked marvellously. Which is why we now retail these ethically created Viridian Nutrition Supplements. A top quality pure Multivitamin may also help too. SUPPLEMENTS SHOULD NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF A HEALTHY DIET.
NO ALCOHOL ALLOWED! Well, it was at least until I had the Eczema under control. I personally found that when I drank alcohol, this made the itching burn so much worse. My eczema skin would be red/hot/inflamed and weeping after 2 small glasses the night before! This was due to the alcohol leaching precious hydration and nutrients from my body.
I made a deliberate effort to include plenty of ‘rainbow food’ into my diet, these are vegetables and fruits of all colours. These helped and ensured that I ingested all the beneficial enzymes & fat soluble antioxidants available for my bodily functions. For increased effectiveness I chose Organic foods and supplements for increased skin healing results. Fat soluble antioxidants are availble in Viridian Clear Skin Complex.
Increasing Probiotics can help with improving gut flora. Healthy gut flora can help with inflammatory skin conditions such as Eczema and Acne. A healthy gut on the inside reflects healthy skin on the outside. Probiotics and other skin healthy ingredients can also be found in Viridian Clear Skin Complex
Increasing minerals into the diet is vital for skin function, specifically zinc and selenium. The trace element mineral selenium can help reduce inflammation. As most skin conditions are triggered by an inflammatory factor. Zinc is also vital as it regulates/balances oil the skin produces. Minerals do their work on the inside and reflect on the outside. Zinc and selenium are both in Viridian Clear Skin Complex.
Including Herbal remedies into the diet can also help improve digestive and liver function, in particular Burdock Root. A good liver and digestive function will reflect on the outside. Gotu Kola is known for producing a different and softer collagen with more flexibility, producing less severe scarring. Both Gotu Kola and Burdock Root can be found in the Viridian Clear Skin Complex.
A new supplement programme has been devised by the experts at Viridian Nutrition, taking inspiration from The Clear Skin Cookbook by nutritionist/herbalist Dale Pinnock. I ensured that I received plenty of rest, sleep is a wonderful natural rejuvenator where the body can heal itself. I skipped those nights out until I had the Eczema under full control.
SOAP – I only recommend to use soap that is natural with plenty of natural vegetable glycerine, a good oily/fatted soap is best for the skin. Most conventional soaps are devoid of the much needed moisture giving glycerine.
I avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulphates [SLS] at all costs. This is a known skin sensitiser/irritant. This harsh detergent is found in most, if not all commercial mainstream products. When I used SLS on my skin, my skin's natural protection, the acid mantle, became seriously disrupted. Of course it does depend on how much SLS is in a product and how much is used.
I avoided commercial bubble baths - they stripped my natural skin oils, as they do tend to contain more SLS than say for example, a shampoo/body wash. Skin needs to retain a nice natural water resistant base to defend itself from invading microbes, etc. The sebum and sweat combine nicely to form this healthy acid mantle (the pH balance) which is also a mild anti-bactericide too.
Sensitive skins like mine and not forgetting babies too [baby skin does not have a fully formed protective Acid Mantle yet] will be prone to the chance of experiencing skin disorders/problems when using SLS products.
Over washing can seriously damage our skin. Since ditching the harsh detergents and avoiding products with petro-chemical derived emollients my skin's ability to function has become far more efficient and also results in NO eczema episodes & general skin allergy upsets.
Whilst Eczema was taking over my body, confusion hit me when I experienced a more combination/oily facial skin type. I later discovered that over oiliness is a typical reaction a sensitive skin uses when faced with harsh detergents as it tries to over compensate from an offensive attack. The skin starts to produce more oil (sebum) as a form of self-protection. Pores became clogged and infected from this excess oil, trapping debris and resulting in blemishes/spots and Acne.
For me, the balance was constantly being tipped until I stopped stripping my skin's natural defence and plastering it with cling-film type petrochemical emollients. Of course, when choosing natural skincare, there is a need to be aware that all base oils have differing characteristics; some, the heavier oils are more suited to mature/dry skins whereas lighter base oils are more suited to more sensitive/combination type skins. Tip if you suffer with an over oily combination skin type, using a natural facial oil will help to cancel out the over-production of oil. Try it, it is like magic! Why use those harsh facial cleansing products, when treating like for like works so much better, without further damaging your skin?
After moisturising my eczema skin heavily my skin would become clogged, especially after using so many after steroid treatment ointments for my eczema. My skin needed to breathe. Too much on my skin can also lead to that hot burning eczema itch. I now needed to achieve a delicate balance between using natural & organic ointments and a very mild and gentle natural soap at bath/shower time. When my eczema was at its most intense, a bath was the last thing I wanted, so I opted for short showers instead. However, natural oil bath products helped when I really wanted a bath.
[Please Note] Sensitive skin is more likely to become hot when irritated. Which is why it is best to use a lighter Lotion/Cream when maintaining skin care balance. Using heavy Creams/Lotions, even if natural & organic, will trap the heat and cause further skin aggravation. Opt for an unscented body lotion. Sometimes the eczema paranoia takes a while to calm down/disappear! But I promise, the eczema paranoia does eventually disappear!
After suffering with eczema for long periods of time, it was great to finally have a wonderful exfoliating session! This was especially nice after using all sorts of creams and lotions on my skin. I would only suggest trying to exfoliate once the skin has gone back to normal, ensuring a month has passed with a good track record of healthy skin even before attempting to exfoliate. Once I had completed exfoliating, I ensured that the fresh bare layers of skin were sealed with a lovely natural & organic moisturiser. Our natural & organic body moisturisers contain plenty of nourishing Essential Fatty Acids, to ensure that the skin is protected. From hereinafter it is now about maintaining healthy skin, free of eczema. Please remember, you don't really need to exfoliate - our skin naturally desquamates [sheds dead skin] perfectly. But it sometimes feels nice to have a good body scrub once in a while!
I try to exercise on a regular basis, drink plenty of water and ensure I obtain the optimum balance of soluble & insoluble fibre my digestive system requires. A healthy digestive systems reflects through the skin. The constant flow of fresh new liquid releases toxins from my system, sluggish lymph is able to move along far more efficiently when I exercise. These basic routines help me to experience far more balance within my body system.
Whilst overhauling my skin care routine & diet I also started to look at the type of household products we used for cleaning our home, shop, office, workshop & stores. The 'normal' available supermarket cleaning products for the whole family are my main source of allergies. These allergies include sinitus, general flu-like symptoms, headaches/migraines & eczema. These supermarket chemicals also exacerbated hayfever symptoms. Being exposed to these supermarket chemicals and becoming ill from them unfortunately means that I am multiple chemical sensitive [MCS]. So, since May 2005 we have been using various ranges of eco friendly/natural & organic household cleaning products and now offer these wonderful ethical cleaning items from our shop. These cleaning products are also free of all irritating artificial fragrances too, so I can personally vouch that since coming away from artificial fragrances/nasty supermarket chemicals I am now 100% free from my numerous allergy triggers and eczema ailments. I feel truly 100% healthy and allergy free.
I know it is easier said than done, but I do take time to relax. I find that meditating & gardening is excellent in helping me keep calm in times of stress. Mind discipline is certainly a skill I would say overcomes stressful situations. I have been practicing meditation since 1999, and can now keep my mind clear and focused. Of course, in the early years when I first tried meditation, it was an ordeal ~ I just couldn't clear my mind, the more I tried, the more crowded it became. I would become so impatient with myself. But like all things, it just takes practice. Our thoughts are very powerful. My body reacts to every single thought that enters my mind and creates instant bodily reactions. We should not underestimate the power of our thoughts.
My main allergy triggers are 1. Sodium Lauryl Sulphates SLS; 2 Petroleum based emollients and finally, 3. Artificial Fragrances. These top 3 ingredients can be found in most, if not all, mainstream skincare and hair care products. Harsh detergents strip the protective skin oil and leave the skin open and dry. Petro-chemical based emollients suffocate sensitive skin’s ability to breathe; the petro-chemical based skincare acts like a cling-film wrap. Sensitive skins have a habit of creating heat when in discomfort. This heat becomes trapped under nasty petro-chemical emollients. When the skin becomes hot and itchy this can lead to broken skin/infections and finally eczema. Unfortunately, if you are a sensitive individual, it is more likely artificial fragrances will further exacerbate allergic reactions, especially more so if the skin has already been unbalanced by harsh unfriendly skin products. Of course, everyone’s triggers are most certainly different and very unique to the individual, some of our customers are allergic to naturally occurring substances and ingredients, for example water & nuts to name a few.
After providing one to one skin consultations for over 15+ years it is very obvious that upset skin is almost always caused by stress. I can now say that I feel blessed that I suffered this horrible experience, from that nasty experience There Must Be a Better Way was born, and since 2004 I've chosen to help others with their skin discomforts.
