About Jason Natural Bodycare

The Jason Story

While the big companies mixed new chemicals to create:

* Perfumed skin creams that promised miracle results.
* Petroleum hair gunk for that swell greaser look.
* Shellacking hairspray for helmeted ladies’ hairdos.

A group of independent thinkers drew upon the pioneering spirit that was so much a part of their California heritage and set out on a road of rediscovery. Theirs was a path back to simple, wholesome ingredients proven safer and proven to work together in naturally effective ways.

And so the Jason [which means "healer" in Greek] brand was born.

Wholesome ingredients were rounded up…

Like Apricot Oil and Wheat Protein for an aromatic shampoo that cleans gently.

Aloe Vera and Vitamin E for a hydrating body lotion that soothes and smooths the skin.

Peppermint Oil and Bamboo powders for a whitening toothpaste that freshens and brightens your smile.

The Jason Natural team meticulously created body loving products - at first just for their own family and friends - staying true to the Jason Natural Code of Honour:

* Jason select safe, gentle and effective ingredients.
* Jason rigorously test every formula to ensure safety and efficacy.
* Jason never test on animals.
* Jason constantly innovate and improve.

As one generation has given way to the next, Jason natural personal care products have remained on the path forged by the Jason brand founders, committed to discovering even more ways to offer Jason personal care solutions safer for us, our families and our planet.

One Family. 3 Generations of Jason Natural personal care products

Allison: a college student and vegetarian.
Robin, Allison’s mum: an ecology director with a master’s degree in environmental management.
Lucille, Robin’s mum: a retired librarian.

How did these 3 generations of women discover Jason Natural personal care?
Was it their shared stance against products that test on animals?
Were they searching for safer products that are environmentally sound?

“Well, yes. All of that is true. But there’s also the itchy head thing,” Robin confessed. In fact, these women all wanted relief from a shared family problem…very sensitive skin, particularly on the scalp.

So back in 2008, on a visit to Mrs. Green’s Natural Market in Scarsdale, New York, Robin searched the aisles for a hair shampoo that would be soothing for her daughter, Allison and herself. “For some reason I was drawn to the pictures of the herbs on the Jason Natural bottle,” Robin explained.

Scanning down the shelf, she noticed the Fragrance Free Shampoo and turned it over, “We always read the back of the bottles!”

Robin was pleased to see chamomile, a herb she knew to be both soothing and safe, plus Sage Leaf Extract. “I didn’t see any ingredients or chemicals that I knew would irritate my skin.”

She decided to give it a try. Within a few days she was hooked. “It’s gentle and soothing and keeps my hair soft and shiny.”

On a subsequent visit to Mrs. Green’s Natural Market, Robin picked up the Jason Lavender Shampoo. She and Allison both love the fresh, clean smell of the lavender. They say the combination of Sweet Almond Oil and Wheat Protein adds natural volume to their hair.

A few weeks later, Robin’s mother Lucile came for an overnight visit. Lucile found the Jason Lavender Shampoo in the shower and decided to give it a try. Just like her daughter and grand-daughter, Lucile agreed her hair felt softer and smoother.

Robin laughs, “Now we’re a three-generation Jason Natural personal care family and there’s no more irritated scalps!” All three women adore the brand’s pleasant scents, are pleased with the results and have come to depend on the brand’s promises of safety and integrity.

Jason Natural Care : Safety

The founders of the Jason Natural brand set out to create safe, wholesome products for the whole family. Today, Jason Natural stay true to that mission and live by a simple Code of Honour:

In 1959, when the Jason Natural brand was founded, being safe and wholesome meant simply avoiding certain chemicals. While the list of synthetics and chemicals the Jason Natural brand chooses not to use in formulations is ever expanding, the Jason Natural brand also sets the industry standard in safety testing.

CAN A NATURAL INGREDIENT BE HARMFUL? Jason Natural began by making a pact to select only the purest, gentlest ingredients, and put them through a series of rigorous testing procedures that would reflect their high standards. Over the years these tests have grown more rigorous. Just because an ingredient is plant-based doesn’t mean it should go into a Jason personal care product. Hemlock is a great example of a natural ingredient to avoid! Also, ingredients that are innocuous individually can produce toxins when combined in formulations. Finally, some natural ingredients can be irritating if too much is used. The safety testing that the Jason Natural brand insists upon accounts for all of these possibilities and has grown increasingly more rigorous over the years. It takes a dedicated team of formulators an additional three or four months of testing after a formula is “approved” to ensure its safety. Only after a Jason Natural formula passes the Jason stringent safety tests is it actually approved for production.

FORMULA STABILITY TESTING: To ensure that the Jason Natural personal care products will retain their original integrity and quality over extended time periods, Jason test formula samples at a variety of extreme temperatures. Extra hot and extra cold temperatures as well as freeze/thaw tests aggressively age the formulas and help simulate what might happen to a product during its life cycle - from manufacturing, to store shelf and finally into the homes of Jason Natural Personal Care loyal users. A personal care product might well be stored in a steamy shower for months at a time, so Jason Natural need to be sure that the Jason formulas will stand up to these kinds of conditions. After 12 weeks of extreme temperature testing, Jason evaluate the samples. If changes are minimal within the acceptable range, Jason can feel confident the product will retain its original quality on store shelves, and then on consumer shelves at home as well.

PRESERVATIVE EFFECTIVENESS TESTING: Because of the manner in which personal care products are used and stored, certain preservatives are required to maintain a formula’s safety and integrity. Unlike a perishable item, Jason Natural expect that a personal care product should continue to work and be safe over long periods of time, even when the cap is removed for use. Over the course a product’s lifecycle, it’s possible that some common household contaminant might be introduced to an open container. To ensure that even when that happens, the Jason Natural formulas will still be safe, Jason test their preservative efficacy. Jason do this by taking a small amount of formula and introducing common, household microorganisms in a controlled environment. Jason monitor these tests to prove that, even over time, the formulas have the ability to suppress microorganism growth and remain stable.

SKIN IRRITATION TESTING: Every formula is tested on human skin to make sure there is minimum potential for skin irritations or allergic reactions. These tests are essential to ensure safety. However, Jason only test on human volunteers. Jason will never conduct these, or any other tests, on animals.

PACKAGE/PRODUCT COMPATIBILITY TESTING: To make certain that the Jason Natural formulas are compatible with their packaging, Jason conduct extreme temperature tests with formulas in their final packages. Jason do this to make sure that the ingredients in the formulas don’t react negatively with the packaging materials. If the formula in its packaging passes these rigorous tests, Jason Natural can feel confident about sending it out to stores.

OVER-THE-COUNTER DRUG TESTS: Whenever Jason Natural create a product [such as sunscreen SPF protection, anti-cavity or dandruff hair care relief] that makes what the U.S. Food and Drug Administration [FDA] calls an over-the-counter drug claim, Jason Natural send the formulation to an independent laboratory. The lab tests the formula to ensure it meets the FDA’s required level of active ingredient. Any formulation that doesn’t have the correct level of the specific active ingredient will not be allowed to make the specified claim and will not be allowed to ship to stores.

Because new information is always becoming available, Jason Natural constantly evaluate the latest ingredient research. When enough evidence calls into question the safety of a certain ingredient, Jason do not hesitate to remove it from Jason Natural formulations.

Safety is a core value of the Jason Natural personal care brand. So Jason are proud to set the highest standard in safety testing. With their rigorous testing, Jason can be sure that the Jason Natural products are as safe and wholesome as the Jason consumers deserve them to be.

Jason FAQ

Do you test your products on animals?
Jason do not. Jason Natural personal care products share your concern that animals are not here to be used -  to test cosmetics, toiletries and household products. Jason do not test the Jason Natural personal care products or ingredients on animals, nor do they ask others to do so for the Jason brand. Furthermore, Jason require that all their ingredient suppliers meet the same criteria of NO ANIMAL TESTING. The Leaping Bunny logo found on the Jason Natural personal care labels is an outward symbol of the Jason Natural brand commitment.

What does the Leaping Bunny logo on your packaging represent?
The Leaping Bunny logo is an internationally recognised symbol for animal cruelty free cosmetics, personal care and household products. In 1996, eight national animal protection groups banded together to form The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC). This organisation created and administers the Leaping Bunny Program, an animal cruelty free standard for companies producing cosmetic, personal care, and household products. The Leaping Bunny Program provides the best assurance that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or suppliers.

Are your Jason Natural products certified organic?
Jason Natural believe in ethical and sustainable agriculture and business practices, including organic farming, and Jason source certified organic ingredients whenever possible. The Jason Natural personal care products themselves are not certified organic – except for the certified USDA Organic Tea Tree Oil, Aloe Vera Oil and Coconut Oil. All organic ingredients found in the Jason Natural products meet all federal requirements for organic ingredients in food products and are noted in the Jason Natural personal care ingredient lists. These ingredients are certified by organisations including Quality Assurance International (QAI), Oregon Tilth and other respected third party organic certification agencies.

Are Jason Natural personal care products vegan?
Jason Natural products use 100% vegetarian ingredients. There is only one animal derived ingredient that Jason use in the Jason Natural products. The sourcing of this ingredient is done in a harm-free, stress-free, cruelty-free manner that does not impact the health or welfare of the animals. Check the specific product label for the following ingredient to determine if the product is suitable for your lifestyle: Beeswax - found in Jason Cooling Minerals & Tea Tree Muscle Pain Therapy.

Are the Jason Natural personal care ingredients Biodegradable?
Jason Natural products are primarily composed of plant-based ingredients which are generally biodegradable and environmentally friendly. For some of their product lines, Jason Natural have had them tested by an independent lab and validated their biodegradability – Jason everyday shampoos and hair conditioners, body washes, hand soaps and sunscreens, except Facial Sunscreen, are all third-party confirmed biodegradable formulas.

Do your Jason Natural personal care products contain sodium lauryl sulfate SLS?
Some Jason Natural surfactant products (shampoos, soaps) contain an alcohol-based sulfate known as sodium coco sulfate. This ingredient was chosen because it is plant-derived, meets the Jason Natural high standard for gentleness and creates a luxurious sudsy lather during use. Multiple organisations, including the consumer advocacy group, Environmental Working Group (EWG), an independent team of toxicologists known as CIR, and the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Science, agree that sodium coco sulfate is a mild and safe ingredient.

Sodium coco sulfate is also an approved surfactant under the NSF/ANSI 305 Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients. Sodium coco sulfate is created from the coconut plant which contains a natural blend of several types of alcohols that can produce sulfates. Coconut alcohol naturally contains lauryl alcohol which is the origin material for sodium lauryl sulfate. For this reason, products made with sodium coco sulfate may contain some amount of naturally occurring sodium lauryl sulfate. Because it is blended with milder surfactants, it is much milder than purified sodium lauryl sulfate.

Jason Natural personal care products currently claim to be made without sodium lauryl sulfate. While there is no sodium lauryl sulfate directly added to the Jason Natural personal care products or listed in the Jason Natural ingredient lists, Jason acknowledge that there may be some amount of sodium lauryl sulfate contained in some of the Jason Natural surfactant products as a constituent of the sodium coco sulfate. For this reason, Jason Natural believe it is more accurate to remove this claim from the packaging and materials and have begun that process. Jason Natural personal care products also continue to evaluate alternative surfactant ingredients that deliver superior product performance while meeting their high standards for gentleness and safety.

Is the Jason Natural personal care packaging recyclable?

For all of Jason Natural packages, please refer to the recycle symbol and handle accordingly for the area in which you live. Most of the Jason Natural personal care product bottles, jars and tubes are recyclable. Jason Natural cardboard packaging can be recycled along with other chipboard and cardboard materials.

What is the shelf life of the Jason Natural personal care products?

Shelf life varies from product to product. Jason Natural recommend you consult the Open Jar symbol on packaging to determine how long a product will maintain its freshness after it has been opened. For example, an Open Jar symbol with “12M” indicates that a product will function as intended for 12 months after it is opened assuming normal use and storage.

While there may not be anything wrong or unsafe once a product has passed this time frame, Jason Natural can no longer be certain our strict standards of quality are satisfied and request that you no longer use the product.
